Sylvester Stallone to auction some of his rare watches in December

Phillips auction house has announced this week that it will be offering a series of rare watches from Sylvester Stallone’s personal collection during the New York Watches auction, “Racing Pulse” on Saturday, December 12.

Sylvester Stallone is an actor, writer, director and producer, whose films have earned Oscar nominations, as well as a painter whose abstract works have been the subject of a museum retrospective. He’s also a watch collector is auctioning off some of his most prized watches, including two that became famous in his movies.

“Over several decades, he has assembled a truly remarkable collection by some of the most important watchmakers of our day,” said Paul Boutros, head of watches, Americas for Philips.

Watch fans have long speculated on the contents of Stallone’s collection. By simply strapping on a timepiece, he has helped spark widespread enthusiasm for oversized, military-style watches and is often credited with helping popularize once-niche Italian brand Panerai. Now, five of Stallone’s watches (two of which Stallone wore on film) will go to auction on December 12 at Phillips. One is the Panerai Luminor that Stallone wore onscreen in 1996’s Daylight.

Considered to be the most important modern Panerai timepiece ever offered publicly, the highly anticipated “genesis” Panerai Luminor that Stallone wore in Daylight will headline the sale, expecting to fetch anywhere between US$40,000 to US$80,000.

The auction will also include four Richard Mille wristwatches: a RM025-01 Tourbillon Chronograph Adventure inspired by John Rambo, RM052-01 Tourbillon Skull TZP Nano-Ceramic, RM059-01 Yohan Blake “Beast” Tourbillon, and a RM032-TI that was worn in the movie The Expendables 3; each of which is set to fetch between US$60,000 to US$700,000, respectively.

Stallone’s contributions to the watch world have been consistently weird, so this slice of his collection is a fitting tribute to the actor. Now, the only thing left to do is play “Eye of the Tiger” once bidding starts on these pieces.
