2021 Rolls-Royce Phantom Features 3,000 Sustainable Tail Feathers, Creating Stunning Artwork
Rolls Royce have always prided themselves on their ability to turn their cars into bespoke luxury creations, but the new Rolls Royce Phantom Iridescent Opulence takes things to a new level.
This Phantom includes artwork that originally debuted as a concept in 2017. It was created in partnership with a Swiss materials specialist with the result being a gallery that houses over 3,000 sustainably sourced iridescent tail feathers. These feathers have been hand-sewn in to the open pore fabric. A Mother of Pearl casing surrounds the clock at the heart of the Gallery while bespoke embroidery at the rear waterfall and silver inlays on the picnic tables complete the design.
The people who buy Rolls Royce cars are increasingly also collectors of fine and contemporary art, so this led the Rolls-Royce design team to create a space to commission within the car.
That space on the dashboard is now referred to as The Gallery – effectively an application of glass that runs across the fascia of Rolls-Royce Phantom, providing a space to present artwork within your car.
A gallery is put together in a highly technical Clean Room at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England – a sterile environment within which delicate and highly-bespoke items can be assembled, from something simple like wood or metal, to a more complicated works.
The Iridescent Opulence is a Phantom Gallery installation consisting of over 3,000 sustainable tail feathers.
It was designed by Swiss-based materials specialist Nature Squared, after extensive research identify a sustainable species of bird with the right plumage to adorn a Phantom’s Gallery. Feathers were selected for their iridescence, individually shaped to accentuate the sheen and then hand-sewn onto an open pore fabric in a design that originates from the clock in the centre of the car’s gallery.
The Rolls Royce Phantom Iridescent Opulence is currently at Abu Dhabi Motors, if you just happened to be in the market for a high-end luxury car and have a real thing for feathers.
