1. Zermatt, Switzerland: Picturesque Zermatt is one the top 10 skiing destinations in the world with its excellent pistes, abundant snowfall and car-free cobbled streets. Sion Airport is the closest airport to Zermatt, just 1h 50m by train, 1h 15m by road or 15 minutes by helicopter. Ski the 13km run from Klein Matterhorn, and catch breathtaking views of the Matterhorn mountain before an apres-ski glass of Gluhwein, hot spiced wine.

2. Whistler Blackcomb British Columbia (Canada): The 2010 Winter Olympics site Whistler Blackcomb is closest to Vancouver International Airport (YVR). It has over 200 trails and abundant snow. Experts love the Symphony Amphitheatre runs while family-friendly attractions include the Big Easy Terrain Park. Car-free Whistler Village has over 748 shops and restaurants from upmarket Fairmont Whistler to traditional steakhouses.

3. Colorado, USA: Within two hours from Denver airport, Colorado is the top ski destination with some of the USA's best Rocky Mountain resorts. High-altitude Breckenridge, a 150-year-old mining town, offers 240km of pistes including the challenging Psychopath for expert skiers. Breckenridge has one of the USA's biggest snowboard parks, over 100 restaurants and excellent shopping.

4. Niseko, Japan: Niseko is a popular, emerging ski resort town, most-visited and valued by Australians and Asians. Located in the state of Hokkaido, Japan the closest airport is the New Chitose Airport in Sapporo.

Niseko has four skiing fields, namely, Hanazono, Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri, with relatively harsh winter conditions. The ski run here is sober in terms of rashness, but of good quality and long stretches.

5. Cortina, Italy: Cortina d’Ampezzo is Italy’s oldest skiing hotspot and one of the most stylish and frequently visited towns as well. Austrian Alpine, Austria: The scenic Tyrolean village of Soll, 100km from Salzburg, offers 250km of trails in the huge SkiWelt area plus night skiing, an illuminated 3.5km toboggan run and snowshoe walks. At night, order fondue in rustic restaurants or a cocktail in the popular Whisky Muhle bar. The airport is located 2.5 miles (about 4km) west of Innsbruck.
