Meet 2020 US Democratic Presidential Candidates Who Can Become Challenger To Donald Trump
In 2020, Democratic voters faced a crucial choice as last summer, there were nearly 30 serious candidates vying for the attention of the party's supporters, but only two are still standing to take on presidential election in November.
About current US President
Donald Trump (President):
Donald Trump pulled off one of the most stunning political upsets in modern American history when he won the presidency in 2016, even as he lost the popular vote. Donald Trump has continued to shatter norms at every turn by stoking fear and resentment with his combustible brand of grievance politics. The 45th president of the United States with a penchant for Twitter tirades and searing racial attacks is unpopular and divisive but continues to inspire deep and abiding loyalty from his base of supporters. As he seeks a second term, Trump is under siege on all fronts amid a rapidly unfolding impeachment inquiry. Have four years of Trump left the Americans are yearning for change.
The two democratic presidential candidates standing in this presidential election race are Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.
Who are they?
JOE BIDEN
Age: 76
Best known for: Veteran politician who was former President Barack Obama's vice president from 2009 to 2017 and U.S. senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009.
Biggest strength: Joe Biden is well-known nationally and popular in some places Democrats have lost recently, such as working-class swing states Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, his birthplace.
Biggest weakness: He would be the oldest person who ever elected as a president, with a nearly five-decade record for opponents to comb through, at a time many in his party are clamoring for a new generation to take the reins. The notoriously chatty former senator also tends to commit verbal gaffes and faced recent accusations by some women of uninvited, though nonsexual, touching.
BERNIE SANDERS
Age: 77
Best known for: His 2016 presidential primary campaign against Hillary Clinton that laid the groundwork for the leftward lurch that has dominated Democratic politics in the Trump era.
Biggest strength: The Vermont senator, who identifies himself as a democratic socialist, generated progressive energy that fuelled his insurgent 2016 campaign and the best fundraising numbers of any Democrat so far.
Biggest weakness: Expanding his appeal beyond his largely white base of supporters.
Polls point to clear top tier
Throughout 2019, Joe Biden was the accepted frontrunner in this race. After serving as Barack Obama's vice-president for eight years, he had strong name recognition and held a clear lead in national polls.
At the start of 2020 though his numbers dipped and Bernie Sanders overtook him in the Real Clear Politics national average after a strong showing in the Iowa caucuses. However, Biden won by a big margin in South Carolina, which helped him to boost his poll numbers.
Although there is usually a clear winner much sooner, the race officially ends in July at the Democratic National Convention where the candidates with the highest number of delegates become the party's presidential nominee.
